1. Become informed! It's been said that knowledge is power and it's true here as well. You don't need to know everything (and there's no need to be a nerd) but if you follow the advice here, you'll be ahead of the game. Doing simple things will keep you safe, give you peace of mind and save you money.
2. Make sure you have Antivirus, Anti-spyware and a GOOD firewall installed on your computer. Learn about good security practices. It's all available on this site, so please have a look around keep coming back to learn more.
3. Make sure your operating system and browser are up to date and that all relevant upgrades and patches are installed. Turn on auto updates to make it easier.
4. Safeguard your personal and financial information. Never give out personal information, passwords or credit card details. Learn about hoaxes, phishing and other scams. If you use E-bay or Paypal find out how to spot the frauds.
5. Use strong passwords. At least six characters with a mix of numbers, letters, upper and lower case and maybe a wildcard character as well. Of course don't use names!
6. Backup your files on a regular basis. Put them onto discs or use an external hard drive. Also remember to save your work frequently as you go along. In the event of a crash or power failure, all will not be lost!
7. Learn what to do in case something goes wrong. Get a copy of "Internet Security Secrets" and utilize the hints, tips, and tools available here.
8. Learn safe email usage practices. Most infections are received through email. Download your free report and find out the tricks to keeping safe.
9. Learn safe internet usage practices. I'm frequently amazed at lack of common sense of many computer users, especially younger ones who should know better! Most threats can be avoided by doing simple things and not doing other high risk activities. Check out our education center to learn more.
10. Do not file share or allow others access to your computer. This is a biggie! See my comments above.
11. Be a good cyber-citizen and learn the rules and etiquette. Share your knowledge with your family and co-workers. If you're a parent, you need to know what is going on and to take responsibility for computer use in your home.
