HELP, I'M IN TROUBLE AND I DON'T KNOW WHERE TO START!

If that sounds like you, read on...

If you've got problems with email or your internet connection, contact your ISP or service provider. It's usually a case of configuring either one, and they'll be able to help you with your settings. Most ISPs have pretty good online support sites where you can diagnose your own faults and retrieve all your settings. If you're not confident doing that, call them up and talk to a human.

If your PC is still under warranty or a rental, your supplier usually has a help desk that can assist you with technical enquires.

For software issues, most basic info, upgrades or patches are usually on available on the manufacturer's support sites. You could also try other related forums or help sites on the internet. Just type what you're looking for into Google and start searching.

If you need help sorting out any problems with Windows or your antivirus, and you want to talk to a human forget it! Companies like Microsoft and Symantec refuse to help their customers and place all sorts of conditions on their live support. The end result is, you can talk to a human but you must PAY! Your only option is their web based support sites. Good luck.

If you've got the usual Windows problems, try one of the sites below.

For serious problems (Yeah, I know, they're all serious) try solutions 1 and 2.

1) If you think .....

  • you've been infected by a virus or spyware
  • your computer is possessed
  • your browser has been hijacked
  • you can't get rid of unwanted programs
  • your computer has slowed right down (more than usual!)

...then download a copy of the book, "Internet Security ". No need to wait for delivery. It's available for immediate download as an e-book and that means that you can get started right away.

You'll find out how to tell if you're infected, where to find trusted solutions and how to fix most problems for little or no cost! It also shows you what strategies to implement so that this never happens again and how to secure your PC and protect your business.

It does not contain software, but lists many trusted sites where you can get free scans, download protection and recovery software. You don't have to go looking. It's all there so that you get going right away. It also contains a disaster recovery guide and tells you how to get up and running even if you can't access the internet.

Even if you haven't got any problems, EVERY computer user MUST HAVE a copy of this book! You'll be amazed at what you discover.

Depending on the severity of your problem, most problems can be fixed for free or little cost just by using these resources. Of course if it's very serious, you'll have to consult a "techie" and that costs "big bucks", so try the free stuff first!

2) If Windows has crashed big time or you think your hard drive has died...

  • try System Restore (if you've got XP)
  • If you're running some sort of utilities package like Norton Systemworks or System Mechanic, you can revert your hard drive to a previous known good point using Go-Back or similar. This works in most cases.

If you can get it up and running but it keeps crashing, you may be in big trouble. Quickly take the opportunity to recover all your files and copy them onto a CD. If you do get it up and running, it may be your only chance to recover your data! ACT NOW!

DO NOT TURN IT OFF. DO NOT RESTART IT. DO NOT GO TO BED! DO NOT RESTORE ANY FILES THAT YOU'VE RECOVERD TO YOUR HARD DRIVE BEFORE COPYING THEM ELSWHERE!

Why? It may crash again and it's all gone. Any action such as installing, restarting, etc may overwrite the old data and you may not find it again.

Again, try all this before calling a "techie". At best, he'll probably say that he'll have to reformat your hard drive and at worst, your hard drive's failed and needs to get replaced.

I hope that helps. Good Luck!

Best wishes,
Joe Jutrisa
